Abstract: The article presents the leading role of educators in the mass social movement, which was called the cultural campaign. Teachers, in addition to their main work with schoolchildren, taught millions of adult Soviet citizens to read and write over several years. The description of this large-scale and effective campaign, which took place almost a hundred years ago, provides a better understanding of the origins of the modern volunteer movement in Russia, the enthusiasm of its participants, and its characteristics.
